A program that bundles code-writing with everything around it in one window: a file tree, syntax highlighting, an integrated terminal, run and debug.

When you will meet it

Choosing a first AI coding tool drops you straight into this fork: a pure-CLI agent (Claude Code), an extension inside an editor, or an AI IDE (Cursor, Windsurf). Only by knowing what an IDE adds over a plain text editor can you judge which layer you need — you are not picking "the more professional look", you are picking whether the AI gets to use those surrounding capabilities inside a GUI.

An analogy

A plain text editor is a desk with only a pen; a code editor adds a ruler and a lamp; an IDE is the full workbench — clamps, drawers and a tool wall within reach. An AI IDE additionally seats an assistant at the bench, tools ready in hand.

Minimal example

The choice is not "which tier is more advanced" but "which tier's capabilities do you need". For running agent CLIs and editing config files, a plain code editor suffices; for reviewing an AI's code changes diff by diff, an AI IDE's visual review is far more comfortable.

What people get wrong

  • Believing an IDE is a prerequisite for AI coding. Several mainstream agents (Claude Code, Codex) are pure CLI tools: a terminal plus any code editor gets you started. An IDE is an amplifier, not an entrance ticket.
  • Letting the AI edit inside an IDE and clicking "Accept All" unread. The core value of an AI IDE is diff-by-diff review; skipping that step downgrades a visual interface into blind trust.
