GUI (Graphical User Interface)
Also: 圖形介面 · 圖形界面 · graphical interface · 圖形使用者介面
The point-and-click face of a program: windows, buttons, menus and icons — the counterpart of the type-it-yourself command line.
When you will meet it
You meet AI through GUIs first (a chat web page is one), but the deeper you go the more tooling leans CLI: install steps, error messages and advanced settings often exist only there. Knowing that both are two faces of the same programs keeps "please open a Terminal" from being a dead end, and stops you panicking when the GUI does not expose the option a tutorial mentions.
An analogy
A GUI is an ATM: press the labelled buttons and you are done. A CLI is walking into the bank and negotiating with a human — slower to learn, but nearly anything can be discussed. The ATM only does what its designers preselected; the human can go beyond the list.
Minimal example
同一件事的兩種做法:
GUI 在 Finder 裡按兩下資料夾、把圖片拖進「預覽程式」
CLI open photo.png # macOS:用預設程式打開這個檔案
xdg-open photo.png # Linux 對應寫法
start photo.png # Windows 命令提示字元open / xdg-open / start are bridges from the CLI into GUIs: one command summons a graphical app to do the work. The two are not rivals — real workflows bounce between them constantly.
What people get wrong
- Casting GUI and CLI as rival camps — "for beginners" versus "for pros". The same tool usually mixes both: configuration in the GUI, fine control via the CLI, and errors that surface only in CLI output.
- Pasting terminal instructions into the wrong window — for example, a shell command into an AI chat box instead of a terminal. Before pasting, check: does this window execute commands, or converse?
