Every agent web_search sends the query to the Brave Search API (outbound, consuming your API quota); results flow back into the model context. With baseUrl set, queries route through your chosen proxy endpoint instead. No local file access.
It implements OpenClaw's proprietary webSearchProviders contract (stated on the official reference page), loads as the @openclaw/brave-plugin npm package, and is configured via OpenClaw's plugins.entries.brave.config structure. Other hosts integrate Brave Search their own way (e.g. the brave-search plugin in Hermes' catalog, or Brave's official MCP server) with no cross-compatibility.
Risk
Queries leak research intent (to Brave and any proxy in between); results are arbitrary third-party web content, a standard prompt-injection vector — if the agent reads a malicious result and then holds high-privilege tools, the injection chain is complete. The API key lives in Gateway config or environment and should be handled as a secret.
