Reflection
After producing, criticise the output once, then revise.
Shape:Two passes of one agent
When to use it
Cheap improvements: coherence in writing, obvious logical gaps, missed requirements. One reflection pass usually recovers these.
When not to
When external fact-checking is needed. Reflection can test internal consistency, not whether a number is actually true.
How it fails
- Self-criticism is not independent verification. The model's bias toward its own output survives the reflection pass.
- Reflection invents problems to seem useful, over-revising and breaking what was already correct.
- The reflection narrative gets treated as a factual record. It is post-hoc rationalisation, not a decision log.
Design notes
Give reflection a concrete checklist rather than "review your answer". Open-ended reflection produces rhetoric, not corrections.
