Repository (repo)
Also: repo · 倉庫 · 程式碼倉庫 · git repository · GitHub repo
A project folder plus a record of every change made to it since day one.
When you will meet it
Almost every AI tool's source, examples and tutorials live in repositories, and 'clone this repo' is the first hands-on step of following any of them. Without this word you do not know where example code comes from, and you will not know the difference between a public and a private repo — so you may upload something that should never have left your machine.
An analogy
Like a document folder where every save automatically keeps a full copy, annotated with who changed which lines, when, and why. You can flip back to any version at will.
Minimal example
git clone https://github.com/ollama/ollama.git # 把遠端的 repo 抓到本機
cd ollama
git log --oneline | head -20 # 看它最近的修改紀錄
git status # 你目前改動了什麼Once cloned, the entire history is in your hands and you no longer need to stay online. Each line git log prints is one commit — one snapshot.
What people get wrong
- Equating a repository with a folder. A folder holds only the present; a repo also holds a timeline — the difference is whether you can go back to yesterday.
- Assuming every GitHub repo is free to take and, once downloaded, free to redistribute. Each repo carries a licence; read it before commercial use.
